Amur, Heilonjiang, in Khingan

The start of the Amur, or Heilongjiang

The prefecture Daxing’anling, also known as Greater Khingan prefecture, is located in the north most part of China in the northwest of Heilongjiang district.

The area is located in the Greater Hinggan Range, a volcanic mountain range which is stretching out also over Inner Mongolia.

The range is densely forested and noted for its flora. The slopes are a relatively rich grazing area. It was the region where the Khitan people emerged from before they established in the tenth century the Liao Dynasty.

In Xilinji, the capital place of the region Mohe, the confluent of the rivers Argun (in Chinese Hailar He) and Schilka forms the Heilongjiang, (Amur river), which is the border between Russia and China.
